Where to Go Hiking Near Lake Martin

Now that Labor Day is over, you may be thinking about off-season activities for life at Lake Martin. As your Lake Martin real estate team, allow us to suggest hiking! We have some gorgeous hiking trails nearby. Take a quick hike once, or designate a day each weekend for hiking each of the best trails. The choice is yours! When it’s warm out, soak your feet or take a dip in the lake afterward!

Here’s a few of our favorite hiking trails near Lake Martin:

Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail – This footpath-only trail system in Dadeville, AL is probably the most popular, as it has all five-star reviews on Google, and you’ll leave with breathtaking photos! It runs right along Lake Martin, so you can stop to play in the lake. Choose from from one to 17 miles of loop trail! They all begin and end at Overlook Park.

Russell Forest – Thousands of acres make up the Russell Forest, surrounding a large chunk of Lake Martin. Hikers, bikers and equestrian riders can enjoy these lands and over 100 miles of trails. Numerous trailheads and loops exist within the Russell Forest, so download a map and plan your next outdoor outing! You will need to fill out a release form and receive a membership card.

Smith Mountain Alpine Trail – Twenty miles north of Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail is the Smith Mountain Alpine Trail! Here is where you will find the highest elevation around Lake Martin. The top of Smith Mountain is rugged and offers some more challenging hiking options, and phenomenal views! Once you arrive at the top, climb the 90-foot fire lookout tower for the best views of the lake.

The Deadening Alpine Trail – This 4.2 mile loop is the hardest trail around, but also the most rewarding! This trail is not recommended for children under the age of 12. Here you can experience more amazing views of Lake Martin, along with unique rock formations, including the cliffs of Tallapoosa, the Needles Eye and Jasmine Bluff. It is best to hike here from March through October.

As you can see, you’ve got some great hiking options near Lake Martin! Enjoy your off-season at the lake.
