Lake Martin

Chances are, you’ll be spending a lot of time in Lake Martin this summer! After all, that is why you moved to the lake, right? As your Lake Martin real estate team, we’re here to fill you in on some lake safety tips that you may already know. But whether you’re new to lake living, or you need a refresher, these are always important to keep in mind for having the most fun on the lake, for staying safe and healthy, and for respecting others on the lake around you.

1.  Always wear a life jacket. This is the number one lake rule, whether you’re five years old or an Olympic swimmer. Even the strongest athlete will have a hard time pulling themselves out of an undertow or treading water all day from a boating mishap. Always wear the life jacket!

2.  Avoid boat exhaust when swimming. If you jump into the lake from the boat, avoid swimming anywhere near the motor, as the exhaust is full of dangerous carbon monoxide fumes. Stick to the front and sides of the boat for swimming. Always remain close to the boat, so other boaters know to watch for you.

3.  Never swim alone. Make a buddy system, whether swimming from a boat or on the shore. It’s hard to keep track of everyone in the excitement of being at the lake, so ensuring that everyone has at least one or two people keeping track of them will help keep everyone safe.

4.  Always have water and snacks. Again, whether on a boat or a beach, summer days at Lake Martin can get hot and humid! It’s easy to dehydrate, and you may not realize it while swimming in the water. Always have more water than you need with you for drinking, and snacks for staying energized.

5.  Wear sunscreen. Same with snacks and beverages, sunscreen is a must for a day at the lake, unless you want to arrive home looking like a lobster. Even if it’s overcast, it’s always good to have an emergency tube with you!

6.  Practice boat safety. There are too many boat safety tips to list in one blog post, but always drive slowly out of the marina or dock and when lots of other boats are around you. Make sure your path is clear before speeding ahead in a speedboat. Stay aware at all times who is around you in the water, such as swimmers, jet skiiers, kayaks, etc. Keep track of the amount of gas you have, never lot a child drive the boat, and make all of your passengers wear life jackets.

This is just the tip of the iceberg for lake and boating safety, but all important tips to keep in mind this summer! We hope you enjoy your summer at Lake Martin to the fullest!
