This is especially important when selling, as buyers are interested in outdoor space more than ever right now. Here are some steps you can take to improve the space you have:
1. Improve curb appeal. The front of your house is usually the first view potential buyers will see, so it’s important to spruce this up when selling. Spend time mowing/watering/fertilizing your lawn so it is lush and green. Prune bushes and trees, clean up gardens, feature some pots or hanging baskets with flowers. Power wash your siding and walkways/driveway. Repaint your mailbox, front door, garage door, address numbers, etc. if needed.
2. Create outdoor social areas. Most homeowners spend more time outdoors in the summer, so make sure you have seating set up for social events to take place. On a front porch, set up some chairs with a small table. On the back deck or patio, get your outdoor furniture ready for summer. Clean and set up. If selling, set the table for photos. If you have a fire pit, set up chairs around it, clean it up and make it look ready to go. Hang a hammock, or set up some chairs down by the water.
3. Add outdoor features. If you’ve got kids, some features that homeowners have mentioned wanting while sheltering in place are fire pits, play sets, pools, bounce houses or basketball hoops. Higher-end homeowners seek outdoor kitchens, in-ground pools, hot tubs and cabanas. Now is a great time to add features for your family’s enjoyment, or when selling. However, talk to your agent about how much value a new feature would add, as some may not be worth the price.
