Lake Martin Runs Coming Up This Winter!


If you’ve turned into a couch potato this winter in your Lake Martin home, allow us to fill you in on a couple upcoming events that will get you outside and active this winter season! The Haynie Team knows how easy it is to curl up inside under a blanket every chance you get. However, you didn’t move to Lake Martin to sit on your couch! If watching the Olympics has given you some motivation, these upcoming events are a great way to get active and to meet other active residents in the area.

Russell Forest Run – 10K & 5K

The 9th annual Russell Forest Run is coming up this Saturday, Feb. 24! This event benefits the Alexander City Schools Education Foundation. Last year’s event raised $9,000 for Alexander City schools! It’s a great cause and great way reason to get outside this winter.

The event kicks off at 7:45 a.m. with a cannon shot for the 10K, followed by a 7:55 a.m. start for the 5K. Registration is $40 per runner. Enjoy running the race, and then afterward, enjoy a post-party held in The Stables at Russell Crossroads. This party always features a famous grits bar, beer, soup, live music and more. SpringHouse and Kowaliga will also both open at 10 a.m. on Feb. 24 for anyone looking for a grand meal after the race.

Lake Martin 100

The Lake Martin 100, 50 and 27 Mile Trail Race is coming up on March 17 and 18 at the Russell Forest Trail System on Lake Martin. These races are for the hardcore runners in the area, and plenty of people come from all over the country to experience this event! Whether you’re starting out with the 27-mile race, or you’re going for the full 100, you can expect almost 14,000 feet of elevation gain. The race starts at the Cabin, located in Russell Crossroads. Registration is open now!

Package pickup will be held at the Harbor Lodge at Children’s Harbor on the Friday before the race for all runners. There will also be a pre-race dinner in the Harbor Lodge on Friday, beginning at 5:15 p.m. The race officially begins at 6:45 a.m. on Saturday, March 17.

This race was named the Best 100 Mile race in North America and the Best North American Ultra in 2017! Lake Martin is representing around the world as a great area to run.

So whether you’re looking to walk or run a short 5K, or you want to go all out with 100 miles of running, the choice is yours, with plenty of options in between as well. If you don’t run, consider volunteering at an event, or just getting out to cheer on those who are running!
